How One Supply Chain Director's Breast Surgery Experience Led to Positive Changes in the Plastic Surgery Clinic She Managed

How long have you been working in supply chain for hospitals, surgery centers, & medical clinics?

Interview Candidate Response (medical director):

I have been working in this area for 36 years.

When did you discover you need to have breast surgery personally?

Interview Candidate Response (medical director):

I found out in 2016, and I was a little nervous considering the fact that I work in this field and just did not ever expect it was something I would have to go through.

What did you expect from your surgeon post operatively as far as the recovery process and how did you feel in the garment that was provided?

Interview Candidate Response (medical director):

I honestly didn’t know what to expect.  I think the recovery was more difficulty emotionally than physically.  The garment provided was very nice, adjustable and provided the support needed.  It didn’t feel like a medical device.  It was feminine and comfortable.

Did you know at the time that you were sent home in a “Karlee Smith Post Surgical Bra”?

Interview Candidate Response (medical director):

No, I was not familiar with the Karlee Smith brand at that time.

At the time of surgery & shortly after, have you ever heard of “Karlee Smith Bras”?

Interview Candidate Response (medical director):

No, I wasn’t familiar but quickly learned that other options were very expensive and the Karlee Smith brand had the best quality and pricing that was reasonable for patients and our practice.

Once you returned to work at the Clinic, how did you address the staff meaning surgeons, office managers, nurses, etc. about possibly looking at a better-quality bra for post op breast patients?

Interview Candidate Response (medical director):

I don’t recall exactly how the subject was raised.  I believe our plastic surgeons office asked if we could look into a surgical bra that was nicer for our patients.  That is when I shared my experience with the surgical bra that I was provided at the facility where I had my surgery.

What is your advice for other medical directors, supply chain management, and hospitals when it comes to addressing post-op patient care and garments?

Interview Candidate Response (medical director):

You need to take more than cost into consideration.  Mastectomy and breast reconstruction is very personal and can be highly emotional.  You need to provide the patient whatever you can to assist them through the process they will experience.

Is there anything else you would love to add if a plastic surgeon, breast surgeon, oncologist, supply chain exec, or any other medical professional is listening that handles breast garments and post op care we would love a special tip from you!

Interview Candidate Response (medical director):

I didn’t meet Karlee Smith until months after my surgery.  She is a caring, patient advocate and listens to the caregivers comments and needs.
